The Potatobase
A database of potato varieties (about 160 in all) which is searchable by variety and type. The potatobase holds data on the characteristics of the potatoes including:
- Country of origin.
- Year of introduction.
- Yield.
- Appearance.
- Resistance to common diseases and pests.
- Cookability.
The data in the 'Potatobase' has been drawn from several sources and personal experience in some cases and is correct as far as is known. It is incomplete in some cases and in any case should only be seen as a guide. This is particularly important in respect to Blight. The blight fungus is known to mutate rapidly and resistant strains of potato may suddenly become less resistant to more virrulent new stains of blight.
The Potato base is a 'work in progress' The application, layout and data will continue to be developed. It should be noted by non UK visitors to the site that the varieties currently listed are those most readily available in the UK although many may be available elswhere.
